Abomination. Curse. Murderer. All names hurled at eighteen-year-old Seraphina Dovetail. As the seventh-born daughter to a witch, she’s the cause of her mother losing her powers and, in turn, her life.

Abandoned as a child, Sera dreams of becoming an inspector and finding her family. To do that, she must be referred into the Advanced Studies Program at the Aetherium’s Witchling Academy. Her birth order, quick temper, and tendency to set things on fire, however, have left her an outcast with failing marks…and just what Professor Nikolai Barrington is looking for.

The tall, brooding, yet exceedingly handsome young professor makes her a proposition: become his assistant and he’ll give her the referral she needs. Sera is quickly thrust into a world where witches are being kidnapped, bodies are raised from the dead, and someone is burning seventhborns alive. As Sera and Barrington grow ever closer, she’ll discover that some secrets are best left buried…and fire isn’t the only thing that makes a witch burn.

I am in love with this story! Why? Because it entails all my favourite genres - fantasy, crime, thriller and romance - the characters are very complex and the love story is wonderfully slow-burn.

The story is told in third person, but still we only experience the events through Sera's eyes. The po... ...more

Seventh Born tells the story of Seraphina Dovetail, a witch who is attending a witchling academy and is about to graduate. She hasn't it easy because she is a seventhborn. The 7th daughter or son born brings disgrace to the whole family and leads the mother to die. Many regard seventhborns as dis... ...more

I received an ARC of this novel via NetGalley and Entangled Publishing LLC in exchange for an honest review.

Seraphina Dovetail is a seventh-born child of a witch, an abomination, hated by most and used for her power by others. After being saved from an evil warlock who tried to drain her powers,... ...more

Love, this book by Monica Sanz. At the beginning I thought that it was going to be a Harry Potter wannabe, because of the magic, the academy, the professors, the cloaks, wands and many other things I thought were Harry Potter inspired. However, I was surprisingly surprised when as the story of Se... ...more

This was a mix of Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, and Magicians and the mix was very entertaining. Sera's character was developed well and as a pace that was fitting to what her past held. Barrington was in my mind a younger Snape/Holmes. Both had pasts that still haunts them but together they see... ...more

Received from Netgalley. Picked this one mainly because of the cover artwork. Lot of mixed feelings on this one. Well I was right but hoped I wasn’t. The story is old fashioned with carriages and proper manners. The abuse/ persecution was full on. I liked the wandless stuff and the fiery temper.... ...more

Thank you to Entangled publishing for the arc of this book.
I enjoyed this book, I got a little bored halfway through but I am glad I read it.
I didn’t guess the betrayal, I had assumed the wrong person would have done it, so that was a surprise.

Let me start out with saying that this was not what I was expecting in the least. It felt like a mash up of Harry Potter and The Black Mage series. Wands, magic, a school for such things and a hierarchy just waiting for someone to come and break it.
While I enjoyed the main character and her trai... ...more

About the author

Monica Sanz

Monica Sanz has been writing from the moment she could string together a sentence. Her stories have come a long way from mysterious portals opening in the school cafeteria, transporting classmates to distant worlds. A classic by the name Wuthering Heights is responsible for that. She's been lost to dark romances and brooding fictional men ever since. Now she writes about grumpy professors, cursed ringmaster, tortured soul collectors, and the girls they fall in love with. Monica’s books have received many accolades on the social writing website Wattpad. She’s accumulated over six million reads, eighty thousand votes, and fifteen thousand comments since posting her books on the website. She is also a member of the Wattpad4, a group of writers who host weekly Twitter chats on the subjects of writing and publishing.
